Description

Systematic position. The Poplar lace bug (Monosteira unicostata) belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Tingidae. These insects are easily recognized by their unique, lace-like appearance of the hemelytra and pronotum. They are specialized sap-sucking pests that primarily feed on plants belonging to the Salicaceae family, specifically poplars and willows.

Host plants and damage. The primary hosts for this pest include various species of the genera Populus and Salix. Adults and nymphs gather on the undersides of leaves, feeding on the mesophyll by piercing the epidermal layers. This feeding activity leads to the destruction of chlorophyll-rich cells, which is visible as chlorotic spotting or stippling on the upper leaf surface.

Biology and lifecycle. The species overwinters as an adult in sheltered locations such as bark crevices, leaf litter, or under debris. As temperatures rise in spring, the adults migrate to newly emerged leaves to feed and lay eggs. The eggs are typically inserted into the leaf tissue near the veins. Depending on the climate, the bug can complete multiple generations per season, allowing populations to escalate rapidly during the summer months.

Economic and environmental impact. Heavy infestations significantly impact the health of trees. Continuous sap depletion leads to premature leaf senescence, yellowing, and eventual defoliation. In urban environments, this damage ruins the aesthetic value of street trees and parks. In forestry and nurseries, stunted growth and the overall weakening of saplings make them more vulnerable to secondary pests and various fungal pathogens.

Management and control. Effective control requires an integrated approach. Cultural practices, such as the removal and destruction of leaf litter, help reduce the number of overwintering adults. In high-pressure situations, chemical control using systemic or contact insecticides is necessary. It is crucial to apply these treatments when the nymphs are active and to ensure thorough coverage of the underside of the leaves to achieve optimal efficacy.
