Description

Taxonomic classification. Mormidea is a genus of stink bugs belonging to the family Pentatomidae, order Hemiptera. These insects are recognized as significant agricultural pests, particularly in the Americas, where they inhabit various cultivated landscapes and thrive in specific microclimatic conditions.

Target crops. The pest causes severe damage to essential crops such as rice, corn (maize), and various legumes including soybeans. By feeding on sap, these bugs jeopardize the vitality of the plant and directly impact the development and yield of seeds or grains during their critical growth phases.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle of Mormidea involves the egg stage, five nymphal instars, and the adult stage. The insects are characterized by a shield-shaped body. They reproduce rapidly in warm environments, with females typically laying eggs in clusters on the underside of leaves to protect them from environmental stressors and predators.

Nature of damage. Mormidea bugs utilize their piercing-sucking mouthparts to feed on plant tissues. When they inject salivary enzymes into the plant, it causes necrosis and tissue decay. In grains, this results in shriveled kernels, decreased test weight, and lower overall quality, which makes the harvest commercially inviable if infestation levels are high.

Control measures. Management of this pest requires an integrated approach. Cultural control measures, such as field sanitation and the removal of host weeds, are fundamental to reducing population density. In cases of economic thresholds being exceeded, chemical control using registered insecticides is employed, ideally timed to coincide with the most vulnerable developmental stages of the insect.
