Myrmica ants

The genus Myrmica belongs to the family Formicidae, order Hymenoptera. While not direct phytophages, these ants are significant agricultural pests due to their ecological role as ecosystem engineers. They commonly nest in soil, around the base of ornamental plants, vegetable crops, and fruit trees, often causing physical disruption to the plant root zones.

Myrmica ants are notorious for their mutualistic relationship with aphids, scale insects, and mealybugs. By actively farming these pests, the ants protect them from natural predators like ladybugs and lacewings. This protection allows aphid populations to explode, leading to severe leaf curling, stunted growth, and the spread of sooty mold on the honeydew deposits.

The biology of the species involves a complex colony cycle with queens, workers, and brood development. As they forage, these ants construct extensive tunnel systems, which can cause soil aeration issues and lead to the drying out of delicate feeder roots. They are active throughout the growing season, frequently relocating their aphid livestock to fresh, healthy foliage.

The damage is primarily indirect but highly detrimental. Besides promoting sap-sucking insects, they can damage emerging seedlings by disturbing the soil around the roots, leading to plant wilting. In many cases, the presence of these ants serves as an early indicator of a significant aphid infestation that requires immediate agronomic intervention.
