Short-spined Myrmica

The Short-spined Myrmica (Myrmica brevispinosa) is a species of ant belonging to the family Formicidae and the order Hymenoptera. Although these ants are part of the natural ecosystem, they are frequently categorized as pests in agricultural and horticultural settings due to their nesting habits and symbiotic relationships with other harmful insects.

The biology of this species involves a complex colonial structure with a queen, larvae, pupae, and workers. They typically nest in soil, under stones, or within decomposing organic matter. Their lifecycle is characterized by complete metamorphosis, and they are highly resilient, often outcompeting native insect populations in disturbed environments like farms or vegetable gardens.

These ants are primarily harmful due to their role in tending aphids and scale insects. By protecting these sap-sucking pests from natural predators such as ladybugs, they inadvertently contribute to the rapid proliferation of aphid colonies. This leads to heavy sap depletion in plants, stunted growth, and the secretion of honeydew, which fosters the growth of sooty mold.

Damage to plants is both indirect and direct. Direct damage occurs when ants build nests in the root zone, disturbing soil stability and causing root exposure or drying. Indirect damage is more severe, as the promotion of aphid and mealybug infestations significantly weakens the host plants, resulting in reduced yield, deformed fruit, and increased susceptibility to viral and fungal pathogens.

Effective control measures require an integrated approach. Physical disruption of nests through deep tillage or frequent soil cultivation is highly effective in discouraging settlement. Additionally, the application of non-toxic physical barriers, such as sticky bands on tree trunks, prevents access to the foliage. For severe infestations, targeted baiting systems containing slow-acting insecticides are used to ensure the entire colony is neutralized.
