Description

The red ant (Myrmica ruginodis) is a member of the Hymenoptera order and the Formicidae family. While common in wild habitats, it is recognized as a significant pest in agricultural and horticultural settings due to its disruptive symbiotic relationships with other insects.

This species is highly detrimental to plant health primarily because it farms aphids, scale insects, and mealybugs. The ants provide protection to these sap-sucking pests, shielding them from predators like ladybirds and lacewings, which leads to unchecked pest population growth and significant damage to crops.

The biology of Myrmica ruginodis involves nesting in soil, rotting wood, or under debris. It undergoes a complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. These colonies are often polygynous, meaning they possess multiple queens, which allows the colony to grow rapidly and persist even if parts of the nest are disturbed.

The damage caused is indirect but severe. Plants infested by aphid colonies maintained by these ants suffer from stunted growth, leaf curling, and chlorosis. The ants' constant tunneling activity in the soil can also disturb root structures, particularly in seedlings and potted plants, causing them to wilt or die.

Effective control measures include a multi-pronged approach: pruning infested branches to reduce aphid habitats, applying sticky barriers to tree trunks to physically prevent ants from reaching the canopy, and utilizing targeted bait systems containing boric acid or fipronil to eliminate the colony at its source.
