Myrmica rugulosa is a species of ant belonging to the Formicidae family, order Hymenoptera. In agricultural environments, these ants are frequently identified as indirect pests that disrupt the health of various plants, including horticultural and ornamental species, by creating complex ecological relationships with other insects.

The primary concern for agronomists regarding this species is its mutualistic relationship with aphids. These ants protect aphid colonies from predators and parasites in exchange for honeydew, a sugary secretion. Consequently, this leads to massive aphid infestations, resulting in significant plant stress, leaf curling, and the development of sooty mold fungus on the plants.

The life cycle of Myrmica rugulosa follows the typical eusocial development pattern. A colony consists of queens, workers, and brood. They tend to establish nests in the soil near the roots of plants, which can cause local damage. The ants are highly resilient and their activity peaks during the warmer months, making them difficult to eradicate without sustained effort.

The damage caused is twofold: biological and physical. While the biological damage stems from the unchecked growth of aphid populations, the physical damage occurs when the ants build galleries in the root zones. This can cause the soil to dry out prematurely and damage root hairs, which impairs the plant's ability to absorb nutrients and water, ultimately reducing crop yield.

Effective control measures require a combined strategy focusing on both the ants and the pests they protect. Applying gel baits, which are brought back to the nest, is often more effective than surface treatments. Additionally, maintaining a garden environment free of weeds and using sticky barriers on tree trunks can significantly reduce ant access to the foliage.
