Nasutitermes

Systematic position: Nasutitermes is a genus of termites belonging to the family Termitidae within the order Isoptera. Known as "nasute" termites due to the specialized defensive soldiers, this genus represents one of the most diverse groups of termites, playing a significant ecological role as decomposers, but also acting as destructive agricultural pests.

Crops affected: These pests pose a severe threat to tropical and subtropical agriculture. They frequently infest perennial crops, including cocoa, coffee, tea, citrus, and various timber species like eucalyptus. In addition to trees, they can damage coconut palms and sugar cane, significantly impacting the productivity of agroforestry systems.

Biology and life cycle: The colony consists of a caste system, including a queen, king, workers, and soldiers. The soldier caste is diagnostic for this genus, featuring a nasute—a pointed nozzle-like structure on the head used to project sticky, repellent chemical secretions at attackers. The colony lifecycle involves mating flights, after which pairs establish new colonies, gradually expanding into complex subterranean or arboreal nests.

Damage and pest status: The damage is primarily caused by worker termites feeding on cellulose-rich tissues. They construct protective mud tunnels (shelter tubes) to reach food sources, preventing desiccation. Inside the host plants, they excavate galleries that weaken the structural integrity of the trunks, leading to stunted growth, reduced yield, and increased mortality of the trees during adverse weather conditions.
