Nasutitermes luzonicus
Nasutitermes luzonicus
Description
Nasutitermes luzonicus is a species of termite within the family Termitidae, order Blattodea. Known for its complex social structure and destructive feeding habits, this species poses a significant threat to woody plants and agricultural structures in tropical climates, acting as a primary decomposer that can become an aggressive pest under specific conditions.
The range of affected crops includes fruit-bearing trees, forest plantations, and various woody ornamental plants. By targeting the inner layers of the wood (the cellulose), the termites weaken the structural integrity of the plant. In extreme cases, a severe infestation can lead to total physiological failure of the plant, especially when the root collar or main stem is heavily damaged.
The biology of Nasutitermes luzonicus is defined by a caste system comprising a reproductive queen and king, workers, and specialized soldiers with nasute heads used for defense. Their life cycle begins with the hatching of nymphs, which then transition into various castes. They build large, conspicuous nests, often in tree bifurcations or underground, which serve as the colony's headquarters.
The damage caused is characterized by the construction of mud tubes or galleries on the surface of tree trunks, which allow the termites to move safely. Inside the wood, they create extensive networks of tunnels that destroy the vascular system of the tree. The presence of these insects is often indicated by external soil deposits or the sudden decline in the overall vigor of the host tree.
Control measures for this pest must be proactive and systematic:
- Soil treatments using non-repellent insecticides to create a lethal zone around the base of the trees.
- Removal and destruction of infested wood debris to limit the availability of feeding grounds.
- Installation of baiting systems containing slow-acting chitin synthesis inhibitors to eliminate the entire colony.
- Periodic inspections to identify early signs of tunneling or mud-tube formation on tree surfaces.
