The primary hosts for this termite include various Eucalyptus species, as they feed on the cellulose found within the heartwood. Unlike some other termites that prefer dead wood, Nasutitermes walkeri is capable of colonizing healthy, living trees, gradually hollow out the trunk, which compromises the structural integrity of the tree and increases the risk of collapse.

The biology of these insects centers on the formation of large, carton-like nests typically situated on the main trunks of trees.
