Diving beetle
Nebrioporus
Description
The genus Nebrioporus belongs to the family Dytiscidae, order Coleoptera. These are small aquatic beetles that primarily inhabit stagnant or slow-moving water bodies, including irrigation systems used in agricultural crop production, particularly rice cultivation.
In rice farming, these beetles are considered potential pests. During the early stages of flooding and seed germination, both adults and larvae can cause mechanical damage to rice seedlings by feeding on the roots and the base of the stems, leading to reduced stand density and crop failure in extreme cases.
The biological cycle of these insects is entirely dependent on the aquatic environment. Adult beetles are active fliers, allowing them to rapidly colonize newly flooded fields. The life cycle involves four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. While they are predators by nature, larvae may consume plant tissues when natural prey is scarce or populations are high.
The damage caused by Nebrioporus involves direct injury to the underground organs of the young rice plants. The most vulnerable period is during germination and initial tillering. High densities of these beetles in irrigation ditches can significantly impact crop uniformity and lead to economic losses if not managed promptly.
Control measures primarily involve integrated management strategies. Proper maintenance of irrigation canals, including the removal of weeds, and precise management of water levels in the rice paddies are essential. If economic injury levels are exceeded, the application of registered insecticides compatible with aquatic environments is necessary.
- Regular monitoring of adult populations at the beginning of the season.
- Use of high-quality seed treatments to protect young sprouts.
- Strict adherence to irrigation schedules to disrupt life cycles.
- Maintenance of clean irrigation networks to reduce breeding habitats.
