While they play a vital role in organic matter decomposition in forests, their impact on commercial agricultural lands can be devastating, classifying them as significant plant pests.

Systematically, this species is classified within the order Blattodea. The social structure of Neocapritermes opacus is highly complex, divided into distinct castes including workers, soldiers, and reproductives. The soldiers are particularly noted for their unique defensive mechanisms, which play a crucial role in the survival and expansion of the colony within competitive soil environments.

These termites target various cellulosic materials, including the roots and lower stems of living plants. In an agricultural context, they are known to attack plantation trees and crops by tunneling through root systems to access cellulose. This activity not only consumes the tissue but also disrupts the transport of water and nutrients, leading to the rapid decline or death of the host plant.
