Description

The Tomato fruit borer (Neoleucinodes elegantalis) is a destructive pest belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Crambidae. It is widely recognized as a serious economic threat to solanaceous crop production in various parts of the world, particularly in tropical and subtropical climates where it can complete multiple generations annually.

The host range of this insect is primarily limited to the Solanaceae family. While tomatoes are the preferred host and suffer the greatest damage, the pest also attacks eggplants, peppers, and various wild solanaceous plants. This ability to survive on alternative hosts makes eradication and containment efforts extremely challenging for farmers.

The life cycle begins when adult moths lay eggs on the surface of young fruit, typically near the calyx. Upon hatching, the larvae immediately bore into the fruit to feed on the internal tissues and seeds. This boring behavior effectively protects them from the majority of contact-based pest control methods once they have entered the fruit.

Damage caused by the larvae is both direct and indirect. The primary signs of infestation include small circular holes on the fruit surface, often accompanied by decay caused by secondary fungal or bacterial pathogens. As the larvae tunnel through the internal fruit structure, they destroy the pulp, causing premature ripening, fruit drop, and total loss of commercial value.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling this pest. Recommended strategies include:

  • Regular field monitoring using pheromone traps to time insecticide applications.
  • Removing and destroying infested fruits to reduce the larval population.
  • Implementing crop rotation to break the pest's reproductive cycle.
  • Applying biological control agents or selective insecticides during the egg-laying phase.
