Neoplerochila

Neoplerochila is a genus of insects belonging to the family Tingidae, commonly known as lace bugs, within the order Hemiptera. These insects are easily identified by the delicate, reticulated, lace-like appearance of their hemelytra (forewings). As highly specialized herbivores, they have evolved to extract sap from the vascular tissues of host plants, leading to severe physiological stress.

The host range of Neoplerochila primarily includes various ornamental plants and specific wild species. Their impact is often underestimated in the early stages, as they prefer feeding on the undersides of leaves, effectively staying hidden from casual observation. However, under favorable environmental conditions, their populations can explode, leading to significant damage.

The biological development of this pest comprises an egg stage, five nymphal instars, and the adult stage. Eggs are typically inserted into the leaf tissue or laid in clusters along the veins. The nymphs move slowly and remain colonial, which explains why damage on specific leaves is often localized and intense. Multiple generations per year can occur depending on the regional climate.

Symptoms of infestation include chlorotic stippling on the upper leaf surface, which occurs due to the destruction of chlorophyll-bearing cells during feeding. As the damage progresses, the leaves may turn pale, yellow, or even brown, eventually falling off prematurely. Furthermore, the presence of dark, sticky fecal spots on the foliage serves as an entry point for opportunistic fungal infections.

Effective control measures require a strategic integrated pest management approach. Since these pests are difficult to reach with non-systemic treatments due to their location on leaf undersides, consider the following:

• Application of systemic insecticides that are translocated throughout the plant tissues.
• Removal and destruction of infested plant material during the dormant season to break the life cycle.
• Encouraging natural predators such as lacewings and ladybeetles.
