The Southern green stink bug (Nezara viridula) is a prominent member of the Pentatomidae family within the order Hemiptera. Recognized globally as a major agricultural pest, this species is highly polyphagous, meaning it feeds on a vast array of plant species, causing significant economic losses across different agricultural sectors.
This pest affects a diverse range of crops, including soybeans, tomatoes, green beans, cotton, and various fruit-bearing trees. The insects utilize their piercing-sucking mouthparts to penetrate plant tissues, which disrupts the normal development of the plant and reduces the overall yield and quality of the harvested produce.
The life cycle consists of three primary stages: the egg stage, the nymphal stage (comprising five distinct instars), and the adult stage. Eggs are typically deposited in clusters on the undersides of leaves. Temperature plays a critical role in the speed of development, allowing the insect to complete multiple generations within a single growing season in warmer climates.
Damage caused by Nezara viridula is characterized by feeding marks, which appear as chlorotic spots or necrotic areas on leaves, stems, and fruits. On fruits, feeding leads to malformation, pitting, and internal tissue decay. In severe cases, the damage is severe enough to cause total crop failure, especially in legumes where seeds may fail to develop properly.
Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling this bug. Key strategies include cultural practices such as removing host weeds, promoting the conservation of natural enemies like egg parasitoids (e.g., Trissolcus basalis), and regular field scouting.
