Notoedres cati

Systematic position. Notoedres cati is a microscopic mite belonging to the order Acariformes and the family Sarcoptidae. It is classified as an obligate ectoparasite that resides within the skin of its host, primarily affecting small felids and occasionally other mammals.

Host range. The mite is highly host-specific to domestic cats and wild felids. Although it does not damage crops or agriculture directly, it is a significant concern for animal welfare in rural households and commercial breeding facilities, leading to severe dermatological complications in infected animals.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle of Notoedres cati consists of egg, larva, protonymph, deutonymph, and adult stages. The female mite burrows into the stratum corneum of the epidermis, creating tunnels where she deposits eggs. The entire life cycle is completed within approximately 15 to 20 days, allowing the parasite to reproduce rapidly under favorable conditions.

Nature of damage and pathogenicity. The infestation, known as notoedric mange, is characterized by intense pruritus (itching) and inflammation. The mites feed on skin cells and tissue fluids, causing the development of papules, crusts, and hyperkeratosis. As the condition advances, the skin becomes thickened and wrinkled, and alopecia occurs, often beginning on the edges of the ears and spreading to the face and neck.

Control measures. Effective control involves the administration of acaricides, such as macrocyclic lactones or topical spot-on treatments, under veterinary supervision. Environmental management is crucial to break the life cycle, as the mites can survive for a limited period outside the host.
