Description

It is critical for agricultural professionals to distinguish between plant pests and animal parasites. Sarcoptes (specifically Sarcoptes scabiei) is an obligate skin parasite of mammals, commonly known as the itch mite. It does not feed on plant tissue and is not classified as a crop pest.

Taxonomically, this organism belongs to the order Sarcoptiformes and the family Sarcoptidae. Its biology is strictly specialized for burrowing into the stratum corneum of mammalian skin, where it consumes epidermal cells and tissue fluids. Unlike spider mites (Tetranychidae), it has no biological role in agriculture or horticulture.

The life cycle of the itch mite is entirely contained within the host's skin. A fertilized female creates tunnels where she deposits eggs. The developmental stages—larva, protonymph, and tritonymph—all occur within these burrows, leading to a rapid reproduction cycle that can cause severe infestations in animal populations within a few weeks.

The damage caused by Sarcoptes is significant in the veterinary sector. Infested animals suffer from intense pruritus (itching), inflammation, crusting, and alopecia. This leads to reduced growth rates, weight loss, and in severe cases, death, which directly impacts livestock production efficiency.

Control measures are strictly veterinary, involving the use of acaricidal treatments applied to animals or their environment, along with thorough disinfection of stables and equipment. Standard plant protection products, such as field acaricides, are ineffective and inappropriate for this organism. For plant infestations, focus on identifying species that actually damage foliage or fruit.
