Description
Systematic position: Trixacarus caviae is a member of the phylum Arthropoda, class Arachnida, order Sarcoptiformes, and family Sarcoptidae. It is a microscopic, burrowing mite specifically adapted to parasitize the skin of guinea pigs, making it a significant veterinary pest.
Affected subjects: The primary host for this mite is the domestic guinea pig (Cavia porcellus). While not an agricultural plant pest, this mite is a major concern for professional breeders and animal facilities where high standards of husbandry and animal welfare are required.
Biology and life cycle: The entire life cycle, ranging from 10 to 14 days, occurs within the host's epidermis. Adult females excavate tunnels in the stratum corneum, laying eggs along the path. These eggs hatch into six-legged larvae, which progress through two nymphal stages before reaching maturity. Transmission occurs through direct physical contact or contact with infested bedding.
Nature of damage and pathogenicity: The mite induces a condition known as sarcoptic mange. The burrowing activity causes intense pruritus (itching), leading the animal to scratch uncontrollably. This results in severe self-inflicted wounds, crusting, alopecia (hair loss), and skin thickening (hyperkeratosis). If left untreated, the animal may suffer from severe systemic distress, secondary bacterial infection, and potentially fatal emaciation.
Control measures: Management of Trixacarus caviae requires professional veterinary intervention. Key strategies include:
- administration of acaricidal treatments such as ivermectin or selamectin;
- strict isolation of infested individuals to prevent spread;
- thorough cleaning and disinfection of housing environments;
