Sarcoptic mange mite

Sarcoptes scabiei

Description

Systematic position. The Sarcoptes scabiei mite is classified under the class Arachnida, order Acariformes, and family Sarcoptidae. As a microscopic parasite, it is primarily recognized for causing sarcoptic mange in animals, representing a significant concern in agricultural animal husbandry and livestock management.

Host range and agricultural impact. The parasite affects various livestock animals, including cattle, swine, sheep, and horses. While it does not consume plants, it causes substantial economic loss by reducing the productivity of livestock farms, necessitating expensive veterinary interventions, and impacting the welfare of the animals in the agricultural ecosystem.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle of the mite occurs entirely within the skin of the host. It proceeds through several stages: egg, larva, protonymph, deutonymph, and adult. The fertilized female burrows into the epidermis, where she lays eggs. The entire cycle from egg to adult takes approximately 10 to 20 days, depending on the environmental conditions and the host's health status.

Damage and harmfulness. The primary harm arises from the mite’s mechanical tunneling through the skin layers and the host's allergic response to mite excreta. This results in intense pruritus (itching), skin lesions, hair loss (alopecia), and crust formation. These symptoms often lead to secondary bacterial infections, weight loss, and general decline in animal vigor.

Control measures. Management of Sarcoptes scabiei relies on a rigorous approach to animal health:

  • Implementation of routine veterinary inspections to detect early infestation.
  • Application of approved acaricidal treatments such as dips, injections, or topical sprays.
  • Sanitization and disinfection of animal housing and equipment.
  • Strict quarantine protocols for newly introduced animals to prevent transmission.
