Nylanderia

Taxonomic classification. Nylanderia is a genus of ants within the family Formicidae and the order Hymenoptera. These insects are well-known as opportunistic and invasive species. Their ability to adapt to diverse environments allows them to form massive, multi-queen colonies that pose a significant threat to agricultural productivity and local biodiversity.

Crop damage and impact. These ants act as significant agricultural pests primarily due to their mutualistic relationship with honeydew-secreting insects like aphids, scales, and mealybugs. By protecting these pests from natural predators, Nylanderia colonies allow aphid populations to explode, leading to severe plant damage, reduced vigor, and increased transmission of plant viruses.

Biology and lifecycle. Nylanderia species are characterized by polygyny, meaning their nests contain multiple fertile queens. This makes their colonies resilient and capable of rapid expansion or relocation. They often nest in soil, mulch, or crevices, making the identification of primary colony locations difficult for farmers and gardeners.

Economic importance. Beyond the indirect damage caused by promoting sap-sucking pests, these ants are known to interfere with irrigation systems and farm machinery. They may also harm beneficial pollinators or disturb the soil around plant roots, which can be particularly damaging to young seedlings or plants growing in greenhouse environments.

Control and management measures. Effective management of Nylanderia requires an integrated pest management approach:

• Placement of slow-acting toxic baits that allow worker ants to carry the poison back to the queens.
• Application of sticky barriers on tree trunks to block the movement of ants between the ground and canopy.
• Implementation of biological control measures to manage aphids and other honeydew-secreting insects.
• Sanitation practices, such as removing debris and excessive mulch, to eliminate potential nesting sites.
