Description
Systematic position. The Tawny crazy ant (Nylanderia fulva) is a member of the Formicidae family, order Hymenoptera. Originating from South America, this species has become a significant invasive pest in many parts of the world, known for its erratic movement patterns and aggressive colonization of human-altered environments.
Biology and life cycle. These ants are polygynous, meaning colonies contain multiple queens, which allows for extremely rapid population expansion and survival despite common environmental stressors. They do not build traditional mounds, opting to nest in existing cavities, organic debris, or even electrical equipment. Their ability to adapt to varying climates makes them a persistent threat to agriculture.
Damage and economic impact. The primary damage caused by N. fulva is indirect. By tending to sap-sucking insects such as aphids, scale insects, and mealybugs, they disrupt the balance of natural predators.
