Description

Systematic position. The Waterlily leafcutter (Nymphula obliteralis) is a member of the order Lepidoptera and the family Crambidae. This moth species is distinct due to its semi-aquatic larvae, which have developed specialized behaviors to survive and feed entirely within aquatic environments.

Host plants. The pest primarily targets various aquatic plants, including water lilies (Nymphaeaceae), pondweeds, lotuses, and floating ferns. It is frequently observed in botanical gardens, ornamental ponds, and commercial water plant nurseries where aquatic vegetation is intensively cultivated.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle involves eggs laid on the underside of floating leaves. Once hatched, the larvae cut out pieces of leaf tissue to create small, protective cases or "houses" bound together with silk. These portable structures allow the larvae to live submerged or on the water surface while grazing on the foliage.

Nature of damage. Larval feeding results in irregular holes and extensive skeletonization of the leaf tissue. When infestations are severe, the damaged leaves become unsightly, eventually sinking and rotting. This process can significantly impact the health of the aquatic plant colony and decrease the oxygen level of the pond due to organic decay.
