Red-headed longhorn beetle

Systematic position. The red-headed longhorn beetle (Oberea erythrocephala) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Cerambycidae. This is a specialized phytophage that, under natural conditions, acts as a biological control agent for plants of the genus Euphorbia. However, in specific agricultural or horticultural environments, it can be viewed as a pest of ornamental or medicinal plantings.

Host plants. The primary host plants for this species are spurges (Euphorbia spp.), particularly leafy spurge and cypress spurge. The damage occurs because the beetle larvae develop inside the stems and root system, which significantly weakens the plant. In rare cases, the insect may migrate to related plant species growing in close proximity to natural Euphorbia populations.

Biology and life cycle. The insect's life cycle lasts one year. Adult beetles are active during the summer, typically from May to July. Females lay eggs by making incisions on the stems of host plants. The hatched larvae bore into the stem, feeding on internal tissues while gradually moving toward the roots, where they overwinter. Pupation occurs in the spring, after which the cycle begins again.

Nature of damage and harmfulness. The primary damage is caused by larvae tunneling inside the stems and rhizomes, disrupting sap flow and nutrient uptake. Outwardly, the damaged plant begins to wilt, loses turgor, and, in cases of heavy infestation, can completely wither and die. Weakened plants become highly susceptible to secondary infections and other opportunistic pests.

Control measures. Managing the population of Oberea erythrocephala in agricultural or garden settings involves the following strategies:

• Regular monitoring of plantings during the adult flight period.
• Mechanical removal and destruction of infested stems before the adults emerge.
• Implementation of crop rotation and removal of wild Euphorbia weeds near cultivated areas.
• Application of systemic insecticides approved for ornamental plant protection in cases of high infestation levels.
