Description
The genus Ochetellus belongs to the family Formicidae within the order Hymenoptera. These ants are widely recognized for their ability to thrive in diverse environments, often forming large, persistent colonies. The species Ochetellus glaber, commonly known as the black house ant, is a notable pest in both residential and agricultural settings due to its aggressive foraging behavior.
These ants are considered pests primarily because of their mutualistic relationship with honeydew-secreting insects such as aphids, scale insects, and mealybugs. By actively protecting these sap-sucking pests from natural predators and parasitoids, ants facilitate the mass outbreak of secondary pests that severely damage plant tissue and reduce overall crop vitality.
The biology of the species follows a complete metamorphosis life cycle including egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. Colonies are polygynous, meaning they often have multiple queens, which makes the entire population highly resilient. They exhibit high mobility and are capable of establishing nests in various substrates, including decaying wood, soil, or even inside man-made structures.
The damage caused by Ochetellus is significant in terms of plant health. Feeding by aphid colonies supported by these ants leads to leaf curling, stunted growth, and yellowing foliage. Furthermore, the buildup of honeydew promotes the growth of sooty mold, which blocks sunlight and inhibits photosynthesis. In some cases, ants may directly damage fruits, providing entry points for pathogens and spoilage organisms.
Effective management requires an integrated pest management (IPM) strategy:

- Use of slow-acting toxicant baits that foragers carry back to the queen and brood.
