Odontotarsus bug

Odontotarsus

Description

Taxonomic status: The Odontotarsus belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Scutelleridae. Known commonly as a type of shield bug, these insects are specialized phytophages that primarily target graminaceous plants, often causing economic losses in agricultural regions.

Host crops: The pest primarily feeds on various cereal crops, including wheat, barley, rye, and oats. In addition to cultivated plants, they can often be found on wild grasses, which serve as an alternative food source and a bridge for population development before moving into commercial fields.

Biology and life cycle: The insect undergoes hemimetabolous development. Adults hibernate in protected areas such as leaf litter, crop stubble, or soil crevices. As temperatures rise in early spring, they emerge, feed on early vegetative growth, and mate. Females deposit batches of eggs on the stems or leaves of host plants, and the emerging nymphs progress through five instar stages.

Damage and pest status: These bugs use their piercing-sucking mouthparts to extract plant sap from stems and developing heads. The saliva injected during feeding causes localized cell death and systemic stress to the plant. This leads to stunted growth, reduced grain filling, and, in severe cases, the death of the spike, which significantly lowers overall crop yield and quality.

  • Implementing crop rotation to disrupt the life cycle of the pest.
  • Managing field borders and destroying weeds that harbor hibernating populations.
  • Utilizing deep tillage (plowing) to bury or disturb overwintering sites.
  • Applying targeted insecticides when monitoring indicates that the economic injury level has been exceeded.
