Odontotermes is a genus of termites belonging to the family Termitidae. They are widely recognized as significant agricultural pests in tropical and subtropical regions. These termites are highly social insects that maintain complex colonies, often building large mounds that serve as a base for their foraging activities and fungal cultivation.

The host range of Odontotermes is extensive, covering various economically important crops. They are particularly destructive to sugarcane, cereals (like wheat and maize), tea, coffee, and cotton. Furthermore, they are known to attack the roots and stems of young fruit trees, often causing complete plant mortality in nursery stages or established orchards.

The biology of these termites is unique due to their reliance on symbiotic fungi, which they cultivate in specialized chambers within their nests to break down tough plant materials. Their life cycle is caste-based, involving eggs, larvae, nymphs, and adults (workers, soldiers, and reproductives). Workers are primarily responsible for the destruction of crops as they forage for cellulose-rich materials.
