These termites are characterized by their symbiotic relationship with fungi, which they cultivate within their nests as a primary food source.

This species impacts a wide variety of economically important crops, including sugar cane, wheat, maize, fruit trees, and various plantation timber species. They are particularly devastating in nurseries, where they can destroy the root systems of saplings, leading to total crop failure if not managed.

The biology of these termites revolves around a sophisticated caste system. Colonies are strictly organized into kings, queens, soldiers, and workers. They frequently build subterranean galleries and earthen sheetings over plant stems, which create a protected environment for them to feed while remaining hidden from predators and harsh light.
