Systematic position: The rice stink bug Oebalus poecilus belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Pentatomidae. It is recognized as a significant pest of cereal crops, particularly rice, where its feeding habits cause substantial economic losses in many growing regions.
Host plants and damage: The primary host is rice. The bug uses its piercing-sucking mouthparts to feed on developing grains during the milk and soft dough stages. This activity results in shriveled or empty grains, reduced milling quality, and increased susceptibility to fungal diseases such as grain discoloration.
