Description
The rice stem bug (Oebalus ypsilon-griseus) belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Pentatomidae. This insect is a significant pest in rice-producing regions, recognized for its specialized feeding habits on grain crops during their reproductive stages.
While rice is the primary host for this species, it is also known to feed on various wild grasses and alternative cereal crops. The presence of the pest is often correlated with the proximity of uncultivated lands or ditch banks where the insect survives during off-season periods.
The life cycle consists of egg, five nymphal instars, and the adult stage. The insect overwinters as an adult, hidden within crop debris or dense vegetation. As temperatures rise in spring, the adults migrate to newly germinated or heading rice plants to begin their feeding and reproductive cycle, with females laying batches of eggs on the leaves.
The damage caused by Oebalus ypsilon-griseus is primarily observed in the grain. By inserting their piercing-sucking mouthparts into the developing kernels, they withdraw plant fluids and inject enzymes. This results in discolored, shriveled, or empty grains, significantly reducing both the quantity and the milling quality of the harvested rice.
