Narrow-winged tree cricket

Taxonomic position: The narrow-winged tree cricket, scientifically known as Oecanthus angustipennis, is a member of the Orthoptera order and the Gryllidae family. These insects are characterized by their slender, pale green or straw-colored bodies, which provide excellent camouflage against foliage. They are widely recognized by the rhythmic, high-pitched chirping sounds produced by males in late summer.

Host plants: This pest is known to affect a variety of woody plants and shrubs. Key targets include orchard trees such as apple, peach, and plum, as well as berry bushes like raspberries, blackberries, and grapevines. Young plants and nursery stock are particularly susceptible to damage due to the delicacy of their stems.

Biology and lifecycle: The lifecycle follows a typical hemimetabolous pattern including eggs, nymphs, and adults. Female crickets deposit their eggs directly into the inner tissues of stems or twigs using a sharp ovipositor. The eggs overwinter within the plant tissue, and nymphs emerge in the spring to feed on tender plant parts as they transition through several developmental stages.

Nature of damage and pest status: The primary injury is caused during oviposition. As the female creates deep incisions in the stems, the plant tissue is structurally compromised, often leading to necrosis, secondary fungal infections, or stem breakage.

In severe cases, targeted insecticide applications during the nymphal stage can effectively reduce the population density.
