Description

The California tree cricket (Oecanthus californicus) belongs to the order Orthoptera and the family Gryllidae. This insect features a slender body with greenish-brown or yellowish coloration, which provides excellent camouflage among the leaves and branches of the trees it inhabits.

This pest primarily attacks trees and shrubs, including vineyards, apple trees, peach trees, and various ornamental species. Damage occurs mainly during the summer, as the crickets feed on soft plant tissues, chewing small holes into leaves and young, tender shoots.

The insect's life cycle includes egg, nymph, and adult stages. Females lay their eggs deep inside the bark or soft stems of plants, creating distinctive puncture wounds. Overwintering typically occurs in the egg stage, safely protected within the plant tissue, which makes control efforts during winter months more challenging.

The most significant agricultural threat stems from bark damage caused by egg-laying. This can weaken branches, disrupt nutrient flow, and create entry points for fungal or bacterial pathogens. In areas of heavy egg deposition, bark may split, eventually leading to the wilting and dieback of the infested shoots.

Management strategies require a multi-faceted approach: regular sanitary pruning to remove infested twigs containing egg clutches, followed by proper disposal. In cases of high infestation, broad-spectrum insecticides are applied during the nymph emergence period, alongside good cultural practices that discourage the establishment of these populations.
