Oecophora is a genus of moths belonging to the family Oecophoridae, order Lepidoptera. While many species in this family are harmless, several members of this group are recognized as significant pests that affect agricultural commodities, particularly stored grain and dried plant material.

These pests primarily target stored seeds, grains, and organic debris. Their presence is often detected in warehouses, silos, and storage facilities where sanitation levels may be compromised. By feeding on the nutrient-rich parts of the kernels, they cause significant quantitative and qualitative losses in post-harvest agricultural products.

The life cycle of Oecophora consists of the egg, larval (caterpillar), pupal, and adult stages. The larvae are the most destructive phase, characterized by voracious feeding habits. They possess chewing mouthparts that enable them to bore into stored items, effectively damaging the integrity of the product and rendering it unsuitable for market distribution.

Damage symptoms include the presence of fine silk webbing over the surface of the infested material, combined with accumulated frass (larval excrement). This webbing binds particles of the crop together, creating a clumpy appearance. Furthermore, the larvae often introduce secondary fungal infections into the storage environment, which can lead to rapid deterioration of the entire batch.

Effective management strategies rely on a combination of preventive and reactive measures. Proper storage sanitation, maintaining low moisture levels, and the application of residual insecticides are critical for preventing outbreaks. Regular inspection and the use of pheromone traps allow for early detection, which is vital to mitigate the spread of these moths in agricultural storage facilities.
