Weaver ants, belonging to the genus Oecophylla and the family Formicidae, are specialized arboreal insects known for their complex nest-building behavior. They use silk produced by their larvae to bind leaves together, creating large, elaborate nests within tree canopies. In professional agriculture, they are often considered pests that require active management to maintain orchard health and worker productivity.
These ants primarily damage a wide variety of tropical crops, including citrus, mango, cocoa, cashew, and coconut trees. By establishing massive colonies directly in the tree crowns, Oecophylla creates significant challenges for farm operations. The aggressive nature of the ants makes harvesting and tree maintenance difficult, often leading to labor shortages or increased protective gear requirements for field staff.
