Description

The sand millipede (Ommatoiulus sabulosus) belongs to the order Julida within the class Diplopoda. As a detritivore that frequently shifts to opportunistic herbivory, it occupies a significant niche in soil ecosystems. It is easily recognized by its elongated, cylindrical body marked with two distinct, light-colored longitudinal stripes against a darker background.

This millipede is a major concern for horticultural and agricultural producers. It feeds on the subterranean parts of various plants, including potato tubers, sugar beet roots, carrots, and the emerging seedlings of cereal crops. When organic matter is insufficient in the soil, the millipede actively targets the tender roots and tubers of crops to satisfy its nutritional requirements.

The biological development of this species is highly dependent on environmental moisture and soil temperature. These millipedes reproduce in the soil, and their life cycle spans multiple years. They prefer stable, moist habitats where they can remain protected from desiccation. During unfavorable weather, they retreat deeper into the soil profile to survive, reappearing when conditions become moist again.

The economic damage caused by sand millipedes is two-fold. Firstly, they create extensive feeding tunnels and craters on root crops, which drastically reduces market quality. Secondly, the physical damage opens pathways for opportunistic fungal and bacterial pathogens. These secondary infections often lead to widespread rot, causing significant yield losses both in the field and in storage facilities.

Effective management strategies should focus on environmental manipulation and chemical control:

  • Maintaining crop rotation to break the millipede lifecycle in heavily infested areas.
  • Improving soil drainage to create conditions unfavorable for millipede survival.
  • Using trapping methods involving slices of raw vegetables to monitor and reduce local populations.
  • Applying registered soil insecticides or granular bait treatments if the population density exceeds economic injury levels.
