Sweet potato vine borer

Systematic position: The Sweet potato vine borer (Omphisa anastomosalis) is a moth species belonging to the family Crambidae (order Lepidoptera). It is recognized globally as one of the most destructive pests affecting sweet potato production, particularly in tropical and subtropical regions where the climate favors its rapid reproduction.

Host crops: The primary host of this pest is the sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas). While it is highly specialized, its impact on host plantations can be devastating, as it can infest crops throughout the growing season, often going unnoticed until significant internal damage to the stems and tubers has already occurred.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle consists of egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. Mated females lay their eggs on the stems or leaves of the plant. Upon hatching, the larvae immediately bore into the vines. The larvae complete their development within the plant tissues, which provides them with a natural defense against many external environmental factors and pesticide applications.

Damage and harmfulness: The damage is primarily caused by the larvae feeding inside the vines and tubers. Infested plants show stunted growth, yellowing, and eventually wilting due to the interruption of vascular tissue function. Tuber damage is especially severe, as boring activity destroys the inner flesh, leading to a total loss of commercial value and promoting secondary infections by various pathogens.
