Description
Omphisa illisalis, widely known as the sweet potato stem borer, belongs to the order Lepidoptera and the family Crambidae. This insect is a significant agricultural pest that primarily affects sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas) crops, causing substantial economic losses in tropical and subtropical agriculture.
The pest primarily targets the stem of the sweet potato plant. Larvae burrow into the vines, where they consume internal tissues. While they mostly reside in the stems, heavy infestations can lead to the larvae tunneling into the developing tubers, rendering the harvest unmarketable and susceptible to rot.
The life cycle consists of four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult moth. Adult females lay eggs on the leaves or stems of host plants. Once hatched, the larvae immediately bore into the stems.
