Description

Oplomus (genus Oplomus) belongs to the Pentatomidae family, commonly known as stink bugs or shield bugs, within the order Hemiptera. These insects are characterized by their flattened, shield-shaped morphology and a specialized piercing-sucking mouthpart designed to feed on the internal fluids of plant tissues.

This pest is primarily known for attacking various agricultural crops, with a notable preference for members of the Solanaceae family. Tomato plants, peppers, and potatoes are among the most susceptible targets. In agricultural environments, high populations of this bug can lead to significant physiological stress in plants, hindering their development.

The life cycle of Oplomus consists of the egg stage, five nymphal instars, and the adult stage. Eggs are typically laid in clusters on the undersides of leaves, providing a degree of protection. Each instar phase involves significant molting as the insect grows, and favorable temperatures accelerate the transition between these stages.

Damage caused by Oplomus is manifested as localized necrotic lesions and general wilting of plant organs. As they feed, they inject saliva into the plant, which often contains enzymes that break down plant cell structures. This activity not only stunts plant growth but also leaves the fruit vulnerable to decay and fungal pathogens.
