Ornebius cricket

The genus Ornebius belongs to the order Orthoptera and the family Mogoplistidae, often referred to as scaly crickets. These insects are distinguished by their small, often wingless bodies covered in delicate scales. While many species remain obscure, those within this genus can become significant pests for specific horticultural and ornamental plant species.

These crickets typically infest a variety of broad-leaved ornamental plants and greenhouse crops. They are nocturnal by nature, feeding primarily on soft leaf tissues, floral buds, and tender apical shoots. Their ability to hide within dense foliage makes them particularly difficult to detect in the early stages of an infestation, allowing their population to grow unnoticed.

The biological cycle of Ornebius crickets involves incomplete metamorphosis. Females utilize a specialized ovipositor to insert eggs into plant tissues or bark crevices, ensuring the safety of the offspring. Nymphs closely resemble the adults but are smaller, consuming plant material throughout their development, which places a continuous stress on the host plant's vegetative growth.

The damage caused by these insects is characterized by irregular, ragged holes in leaves and the destruction of flower petals and buds. This feeding activity not only impairs the aesthetic quality of ornamental plants but also creates entry points for secondary infections such as fungi and bacteria, which can cause further tissue necrosis or systemic weakening of the plant.
