Otala

Otala is a genus of air-breathing land snails belonging to the family Helicidae, order Stylommatophora. These mollusks are recognized as significant agricultural pests in regions with Mediterranean or temperate climates, where they can rapidly colonize gardens, vineyards, and agricultural fields.

The host range of Otala is extensive, encompassing various vegetables, ornamental plants, and fruit crops. They are particularly destructive to lettuce, cabbage, seedlings, and the soft tissues of new shoots. Their feeding habits can lead to total crop failure if infestation levels are high during the vulnerable growth stages of the plants.

The biological cycle of Otala is highly moisture-dependent. Being hermaphroditic, they deposit eggs in moist soil or sheltered areas. Their life cycle typically involves a period of active feeding during the night or overcast weather, while they may retreat into their shells during dry conditions to conserve water, emerging again when humidity rises.

The damage caused by Otala is characterized by large, irregular holes in leaves and stems, often leading to the complete skeletonization of plant tissue. Beyond the direct mechanical damage, the slime trails left by the snails attract secondary fungal and bacterial pathogens, exacerbating the decline of the plant health and reducing the quality of the produce.

Managing Otala infestations requires an integrated pest management (IPM) approach:

• Removing debris and weeds where snails hide during the day.
• Implementing physical barriers like copper tape or sharp grit around garden beds.
• Setting up beer traps or commercial molluscicide baits.
• Encouraging natural predators such as hedgehogs, ground beetles, and predatory birds.
