Pachymerus

Pachymerus is a genus of insects belonging to the Bruchidae family within the order Coleoptera. These beetles, often referred to as seed beetles, are recognized as significant pests that specifically target the seeds of various plants, causing substantial damage to both agricultural crops and stored food commodities.

The host range of Pachymerus primarily includes legumes and the seeds of certain palm species. As global trade expands, these pests are frequently intercepted in international shipments. Their ability to survive within the protective hull of a seed allows them to travel long distances unnoticed, posing a risk to diverse agricultural sectors.

The biology of the pest is characterized by an endophagous larval stage. Adult females oviposit on the seed coat, and upon hatching, the larvae bore directly into the seed. Inside, the larvae develop by feeding on the kernel, effectively hollowing out the interior and leaving behind only a shell, which significantly disrupts the plant's reproductive potential.

The economic impact of Pachymerus is severe, primarily manifesting in the destruction of stored seeds. Infested batches lose their viability, making them useless for planting, and suffer a drastic reduction in nutritional quality and commercial value, often becoming contaminated with larval frass and debris.
