Description
Systematic position. The hackberry blister gall psyllid (Pachypsylla celtidisvesicula) belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Psyllidae. These insects are highly specialized phytophages that have evolved a unique parasitic relationship with hackberry trees (Celtis species), making them a primary biotic factor affecting the health of these specific trees.
Host plants and damage. The primary host for this psyllid is the common hackberry (Celtis occidentalis). The economic and aesthetic damage is characterized by the formation of blister-like galls on the leaf blades. While these galls rarely cause tree death, heavy infestations result in significant defoliation, aesthetic loss, and physiological stress, which may predispose the trees to drought or secondary pest attacks.
Biology and life cycle. The life cycle is strictly synchronized with the host plant's phenology. Adult psyllids overwinter in protected bark crevices. In early spring, when buds break, they emerge to mate and lay eggs on developing leaves. Once the nymphs hatch, they feed on the leaf tissues, secreting substances that induce the plant to form a protective gall. The nymphs remain inside these structures until they mature into adults.
Damage symptoms. The primary symptom is the presence of numerous small, circular, blister-like galls on the leaves. These galls are typically yellowish or pale green and can cause the leaf surface to become distorted and chlorotic. In severe cases, the entire leaf canopy may appear stunted, and the loss of photosynthetic efficiency can impact the overall vigor of the affected hackberry tree.
Protection measures. Managing this pest requires proactive care and timely intervention:
- Apply systemic insecticides during the leaf-out phase before the galls have completely formed.
- Prune and destroy heavily infested branches to reduce the local population of the pest.
- Promote overall tree vitality through proper irrigation, mulching, and fertilization.
- Encourage natural biological control by maintaining habitats for predatory insects that feed on psyllid nymphs.
