Hackberry gall psyllid

Systematic position. The Hackberry gall psyllid (Pachypsylla venusta) belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Psyllidae. These insects are specialized herbivores known for their intricate interaction with host plants, resulting in the formation of distinct vegetative galls.

Host plants. This species exclusively targets trees of the genus Celtis, commonly known as hackberries. Its presence is strictly tied to the distribution of these trees, which are often used in urban landscaping and forestry, making the psyllid a significant concern for arborists.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle is synchronized with the bud break of the host tree. Adults emerge in early spring, mate, and lay eggs on young leaf tissue. Upon hatching, the nymphs secrete biochemical compounds that induce the plant to form a gall. The nymph remains protected within this structure, feeding on plant juices throughout its larval development.

Type of damage and economic impact. The infestation manifests as characteristic galls on the leaf surfaces. While usually not fatal to healthy, mature trees, heavy infestations can lead to premature leaf drop, leaf curling, and a reduction in the aesthetic value of ornamental trees, causing stress to the plant during the growing season.

Integrated pest management, focusing on tree health and environmental maintenance, is the preferred approach for long-term control.
