Systematic position: Panchlora nivea, commonly referred to as the Cuban cockroach, belongs to the order Blattodea and the family Blaberidae. Unlike the common domestic cockroach, this species is primarily an outdoor dweller that prefers humid tropical and subtropical environments, often residing in tree canopies or leaf litter.

Biology and lifecycle: The insect is distinguished by its vivid pale green coloration, which provides excellent camouflage within dense foliage. Its lifecycle consists of egg, nymph, and adult stages. These cockroaches are ovoviviparous, with females carrying the egg capsule internally until the nymphs are ready to emerge, which contributes to high survival rates in natural conditions.

Damage patterns and economic impact: While primarily considered a garden insect, Panchlora nivea can become a significant pest in greenhouses and nurseries. They feed on tender foliage, buds, and young shoots. Their feeding activity causes aesthetic damage to ornamental plants and can severely stunt the growth of young vegetable starts, leading to economic losses.

Target crops and diet: As a generalist scavenger, it consumes a wide variety of organic matter. However, in enclosed environments, they frequently shift to feeding on succulent plant tissues. This behaviour puts a wide range of floriculture and greenhouse-grown crops at risk, as the insects can quickly consume delicate leaves, weakening the plant's structural integrity.

Control measures are essential for population management:

  • Maintain greenhouse sanitation by removing decaying plant debris.
  • Implement monitoring using sticky traps to detect early infestations.
  • Apply biological controls, such as entomopathogenic fungi.
  • Utilize selective insecticides during peak activity periods.

Because these cockroaches are capable of flight and are attracted to artificial light, preventing their entry into greenhouses is a primary defence strategy. Regular inspections and the maintenance of clean, dry growing environments remain the most effective methods for keeping populations below damaging thresholds.
