Systematic position: Pantographa limata is a moth species belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Crambidae. It is commonly referred to as the linden leaf tier, a name derived from the caterpillar's unique behavior of cutting and rolling leaves into protective structures.

Host plants: The primary host for this pest is the linden tree (Tilia species), specifically American linden. While it is rarely a fatal pest, its presence can significantly detract from the aesthetic value of urban trees and ornamental plantings, requiring management in high-value landscapes.

Biology and life cycle: The insect undergoes complete metamorphosis. Adults are nocturnal moths that emerge to mate and lay eggs. The larvae are the damaging stage, feeding on leaf tissue. The cycle is tightly synchronized with the leaf development of the host tree, allowing larvae to secure an immediate food source upon hatching.

Nature of damage and pest status: Larvae cut a semi-circular piece of the leaf margin and fold it over, pinning it with silk to create a larval tube. They feed from within this structure, resulting in skeletonized or irregularly shaped leaves. High infestation levels can cause notable defoliation, leading to reduced tree vigor and aesthetic decline.

Protection measures: Management practices include:

• Manual removal and destruction of rolled leaves during light infestations.
• Application of Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) when larvae are young and exposed.
• Use of systemic insecticides in severe cases, applied before significant leaf rolling occurs.
• Promoting tree health through proper fertilization and irrigation to mitigate stress from defoliation.
