Description

Parabemisia is a genus of insects belonging to the Aleyrodidae family within the order Hemiptera. Commonly known as a type of whitefly, the most economically significant species is Parabemisia myricae, also known as the Japanese bayberry whitefly, which has become a major concern for citrus growers in various parts of the world.

This pest has a diverse host range, primarily targeting evergreen plants. Citrus trees are the main victims, but the pest is also known to infest avocado, persimmon, and various ornamental species. In greenhouse environments, the lack of natural predators can lead to rapid population explosions, causing severe stress to the affected plants.

The biology of Parabemisia follows a pattern typical of whiteflies, consisting of egg, four nymphal stages, and adult phases. The first instar larvae, or crawlers, are the only mobile immature stage. Once they choose a feeding site on the undersurface of the leaves, they lose their mobility and begin to feed exclusively on the plant sap.

The damage caused by these insects is two-fold: direct feeding damage leads to leaf distortion, chlorosis, and reduced vigor of the host plant. Additionally, the secretion of honeydew promotes the growth of sooty mold. This layer of fungus hinders photosynthesis and leaves behind sticky residues on leaves and fruits, significantly reducing the market value of the produce.

Management strategies must be integrated to be effective.

  • Biological control using parasitoid wasps, such as Eretmocerus debachi, has proven very successful.
  • Deployment of yellow sticky traps to detect and monitor population levels.
  • Targeted chemical applications using soaps, oils, or systemic insecticides during the crawler stage.
  • Maintaining strict quarantine measures to prevent the spread of infested nursery stock.
