Description
Paraleyrodes is a genus of insects belonging to the family Aleyrodidae within the order Hemiptera. These tiny insects are globally recognized as significant pests that affect a wide variety of woody plants, ornamentals, and fruit crops, particularly in subtropical and tropical climates.
The primary host plants for these pests include various citrus species, avocado, mango, ficus, and hibiscus. They feed primarily on the underside of leaves, inserting their piercing-sucking mouthparts into the phloem to extract sap, which drains the plant's vitality over time.
The life cycle consists of the egg, several larval instars (nymphs), and the adult stage. A distinct biological feature of the genus is the secretion of waxy filaments or flakes by the nymphs, which provide a physical shield against environmental stress and contact insecticides, complicating conventional chemical control.
Damage to plants is characterized by yellowing, leaf chlorosis, and premature senescence. Furthermore, the excretion of honeydew promotes the growth of sooty mold, which creates a dark film on leaves and fruit, obstructing light absorption and significantly reducing the commercial value of the harvest.
Effective management requires a combination of strategies. Chemical control is often challenging due to the wax protection, necessitating the use of systemic insecticides. Cultural practices such as pruning infected branches, ensuring proper spacing for airflow, and implementing biological control using specific parasitoid wasps are critical for maintaining healthy plant populations.
