Description

Bondar's whitefly (Paraleyrodes bondari) is an insect belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Aleyrodidae. This tiny, inconspicuous pest is known to be a significant threat to various evergreen plants in tropical and subtropical regions, requiring vigilant management in both commercial orchards and greenhouses.

The primary hosts of this pest are citrus species, including lemons, oranges, and limes. However, its host range is quite broad, extending to other economically important plants such as avocado and various ornamental species, making it a critical pest to monitor in nurseries and international agricultural trade.

The life cycle of Paraleyrodes bondari comprises the egg stage, three larval instars, a pupal stage, and the adult phase. After hatching, the first-instar larvae, often called crawlers, move briefly across the leaf surface to find a feeding site. Subsequent instars and pupae are sedentary, anchored to the plant tissue while they extract sap.

Damage is characterized by leaf yellowing, stunting of shoot growth, and general decline of the plant vigor. Furthermore, the secretion of honeydew by the whiteflies encourages the growth of sooty mold, which covers the foliage, blocks sunlight, and significantly impairs the plant's ability to photosynthesize effectively.

Control strategies should focus on integrated pest management (IPM). Key measures include physical monitoring with yellow sticky traps, promoting natural biological control agents such as parasitic wasps, and the judicious use of horticultural oils or insecticidal soaps. Chemical control with systemic insecticides should be a secondary measure, reserved for severe infestations.
