Description
Paraleyrodes citricola is a significant agricultural pest belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Aleyrodidae. This whitefly species primarily targets citrus trees, posing a constant threat to commercial fruit production in subtropical and tropical regions globally.
The pest predominantly affects various citrus hosts, including lemons, oranges, mandarins, and grapefruits. While citrus species are the main targets, the pest is capable of infesting other perennial ornamental plants, making it a persistent challenge in integrated pest management programs.
The biology of this species consists of an egg stage, three nymphal instars, a pupal stage, and the adult stage. The nymphs are sedentary, settling on the underside of leaves and secreting a waxy substance that acts as a protective shield against environmental stressors and some chemical treatments.
Damage is characterized by nymphs extracting phloem sap, which deprives the host plant of essential nutrients. A secondary consequence is the production of honeydew, which serves as a substrate for sooty mold fungus. This mold covers the leaves in a black layer, drastically reducing the tree's photosynthetic capability.
