Guava whitefly

The guava whitefly (Paraleyrodes goyabae) is a significant agricultural pest belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Aleyrodidae. Known for its adaptability, this species has become a concern for fruit growers in various tropical and subtropical regions worldwide, significantly impacting the productivity of affected orchards.

This pest has a notable preference for plant species within the Myrtaceae family, particularly guava, and is also a frequent colonizer of various citrus varieties. Due to global trade patterns, the movement of infested nursery stock remains the primary pathway for the introduction of this pest into new geographic areas.

The life cycle of Paraleyrodes goyabae involves a gradual metamorphosis, transitioning through egg, four nymphal instars, and the adult stage. The adults and nymphs are protected by a characteristic white, waxy secretion that acts as a physical barrier against desiccation and helps the insect camouflage itself against the leaf surface.

The economic damage caused by the guava whitefly stems from direct sap extraction and indirect secondary damage. During feeding, these insects excrete honeydew, which serves as a substrate for sooty mold fungi. This mold buildup covers leaves, disrupting gas exchange and photosynthesis, eventually leading to chlorosis, stunted growth, and heavy fruit drop.

Effective management requires an integrated approach to minimize reliance on chemicals while maximizing control efficacy:

• Deploying yellow sticky traps to detect and monitor population spikes.
• Applying systemic insecticides approved for use in local agricultural protocols.
• Encouraging the presence of natural enemies, such as parasitic wasps in the Encarsia genus.
• Implementing strict quarantine measures and careful inspection of imported planting materials.
