Avocado whitefly

Taxonomic classification: The avocado whitefly (Paraleyrodes perseae) is a member of the order Hemiptera and the family Aleyrodidae. It is a highly invasive insect species that has become a significant concern for tropical and subtropical agriculture globally, particularly affecting specialized fruit production.

Host plants: As the name suggests, the primary host for this pest is the avocado tree. However, its host range extends to a wide variety of plants, including citrus, numerous ornamental trees, and several palm species. This polyphagous nature allows the pest to sustain its population across diverse urban and agricultural landscapes.

Biology and lifecycle: The life cycle consists of the egg stage, four nymphal stages, and the adult stage. The insects typically complete their development on the undersides of leaves. Favorable climate conditions, specifically high humidity and warm temperatures, accelerate the reproduction cycle, allowing the population to reach damaging levels in a very short period.

Damage and severity: Damage is caused primarily by nymphs feeding on plant sap. As they feed, they excrete large amounts of honeydew. This sticky substance serves as an ideal medium for the growth of sooty mold fungus. This black covering on leaves inhibits photosynthesis, reduces tree vigor, and, in severe cases, leads to leaf drop and decreased fruit quality and quantity.

Control measures: Management of Paraleyrodes perseae requires an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) approach. Key strategies include:

• Deployment of yellow sticky traps for population monitoring.
• Encouraging and releasing natural predators and parasitoids.
• Application of horticultural oils to suppress nymph populations.
• Systemic insecticide treatments during high-infestation periods.
