The rice water moth (Parapoynx crisonalis) is a specialized insect pest belonging to the Crambidae family. Unlike terrestrial moths, this species has evolved to thrive in flooded environments, making it a persistent threat to rice cultivation in various tropical and subtropical regions. Its biology is uniquely adapted to aquatic ecosystems, which presents specific challenges for control.

The primary host for this pest is the rice plant, although it is capable of infesting other aquatic weeds that share the same habitat. The moth is most prolific in irrigated rice fields where standing water is maintained throughout the growing season. The larvae exhibit remarkable adaptations, including respiratory filaments that enable underwater gas exchange.

The life cycle begins when the female lays eggs on the undersides of leaves or floating plant debris. Upon hatching, the larvae create protective cases using leaf fragments bound with silk. These shelters provide protection against predators and environmental stress while the larvae feed on the leaf tissue, gradually skeletonizing the foliage.

The damage caused by Parapoynx crisonalis is primarily focused on the leaves. By scraping off the epidermis and consuming the mesophyll, the larvae severely reduce the plant's photosynthetic capacity. In cases of high infestation, entire fields can appear defoliated, leading to stunted plant growth and a significant reduction in grain yield at harvest.

  • Water management, specifically temporary drainage of fields to disrupt the aquatic larval stage.
  • Removal of alternative host weeds from irrigation channels to reduce the breeding pool.

  • Monitoring adult moth activity with light traps to time the application of controls precisely.
